Until he graduated from the high school, he had grown up in Hirosaki-shi, Aomori prefecture.

Then he entered Musashino Art University, but he dropped out 1 year later. After that, he entered faculty of art, Aichi University of the Arts, and got bachelor’s degree in 1985, also he got the master’s degree in 1987.

After he taught at Research Center of Fine Arts, Chikusa branch school, Kawai cramming school, he moved to Germany. Then he entered German national Dusseldorf art academy in 1988.

He studied under A.R. Penck, and got Meisterschüler in 1993. After that, he started to work on art mainly at the atelier in Köln.

During the stay in Köln, Tsuchizaki Masahiko who belonged to Galarie Humanite gave accolades to him.Therefore, Tsuchizaki invited Nara to exhibit his arts at “Hakutosya” that is the gallery Tsuchizaki made. A few years later, Nara exhibited at Koyama Tomio Gallery, then gradually he became popular in Japan, Europe and America.

In 1998 he taught at UCLA as a visiting member professor for 3 months. Then, he came back to Tokyo in 2000. 5 years later, he moved to Tochigi prefecture.

In 2013 he got an art prize from the minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.After 2013, his works are exhibited at “Blum & Poe”, ”Pace Gallery”, ”Johnen Galerie”, ”Stephen Friedman Gallery”.
